Google Ad Grants setup: a sensible first account

A good first setup connects the correct grant account, a working website and reliable conversion tracking to a small set of coherent Search themes. Build the foundation before adding more campaign types.

Confirm what has actually been approved

Google for Nonprofits membership and Ad Grants activation are distinct. If the grant has not been activated, complete that process before treating a standard Google Ads account as grant-funded. Keep a record of the administrator email and the supplied Customer ID.

Ownership matters as much as settings. Identify who can fix the website, approve a new page, manage Analytics and respond to programme notices. An account can be technically ready but operationally blocked when nobody owns the next action.

Choose the outcomes before the keywords

Write down what the nonprofit wants people to do and how the website confirms it happened. A completed volunteer application or service enquiry can be more useful than a large number of easy page-view events.

Keep donations and intermediate actions separate in reporting. If both appear in one conversion total, a shift towards easy actions may look like improvement while the valuable outcomes remain unchanged.

Build around a few real intentions

For a local environmental charity, possible themes include its own organisation name, local volunteering and an educational resource about the area it protects. These are hypothetical examples; choose themes supported by your actual work.

  • Give each campaign a clear purpose and intentional geography.
  • Keep ad groups coherent enough to write a specific ad.
  • Match keywords and messages to a credible destination.
  • Use assets to expose useful next routes through the site.

Prepare the landing page and message together

Read the page as someone who has never heard of the organisation. Does it answer the search, explain who is behind it and make the next step obvious? Test on a phone without a staff login.

Draft responsive search ad inputs that can combine naturally. Use truthful claims, varied topic and action wording and the character limits shown in the editor. Sitelinks should lead to genuinely different useful destinations, not several labels for the same page.

Set bidding with measurement in mind

I generally start with Maximize Conversions once the selected actions are tested. A restrictive target can reduce delivery, but removing it is not a substitute for relevant demand. Keep the grant allowance distinct from a campaign’s individual budget allocation.

Review the current programme policy before launch. Recommendations about creative workflow, keyword grouping and asset completeness do not replace published requirements.

Run a launch check

Open every destination, review approvals and selected goals, then save a baseline. At the first review, ask whether the campaign is entering useful auctions. At later reviews, inspect which searches and pages are creating value.

  • Correct identity and Customer ID recorded.
  • Important actions tested and duplicate measurements excluded.
  • Campaign purpose, geography and destinations reviewed.
  • Ads and assets checked for approval and truthful claims.
  • Owner and first review date assigned.

Add complexity when it answers a question

AI Max or PMax can be valuable when existing coverage misses useful demand. They should arrive with a query and URL review process. A small account with clear decisions is easier to improve than a large account whose campaigns repeat the same promise.

Sources and scope

Google documentation supports product and policy details. The diagnostic order and examples are Grant Growth recommendations. Community resources are identified separately; they are not policy exemptions.
